Having struggled with fixture congestion in 2023, Hunts and Peterborough Rugby offered their members an innovative solution – a pre-season 10s tournament in a battle for the trophy last completed in 2022.
Four squads from Deepings, Peterborough Lions, St. Ives and Thorney joined the action on 17th August and it was the Ives second team squad that came out victorious.
Despite the early morning start, Ives gathered a young and enthusiastic squad. Two debutants were welcomed to senior rugby in Oliver Giglio and Henry Stancombe.
Throughout the games, the Bulls played an exciting brand of rugby which the new coaching team has introduced.
In the final game of the day against Peterborough Lions, they overcame their higher league opposition.
The tournament saw some sensational tries from Harry Smith, Jobie Wadd, Henry Stancombe, Oliver Giglio (3) and Rees Burns.
Dan Hawkins and Charlie Mandley managed the midfield both sides of the ball and Jack Hickman was a sensation in the lineout.
Director of Rugby Duncan Williams was a contented man following the outing. “It was encouraging to see our young players with ambitions of breaking into the first team perform so well against higher level opposition. They have taken on our new style of play unbelievably quickly. We are happy to have won the H&P cup, but for this talented group it certainly won't be their greatest achievement."
